Steps in this project include:

1. Process acreage data
   • Download & extract acreage data
   • Create keys to relate USDA crops to USGS crops
     • For most states
     • For California
   • Aggregate crop acreage data
     • State acreage by surveyed crops (most states)
     • California acreage by surveyed crops
2. Estimate pesticide application rates in kg/ha and in honey bee LD50 units
3. Downscale pesticide application rates through the CDL
   • Aggregate data for double crops
     • California
     • All other states
   • Generate keys to reclass CDL land use into insecticide loading (honey bee LD50s)
     • Insecticide loading (honey bee LD50s)
     • Loading of particular compounds
   • Example: Reclassify the CDL and create maps
     • Generate reclass tables + reclassify CDL
     • Make maps
       • Prep files for mapping
       • Create maps
4. Technical validation
   • Prepare dataset of USDA pesticide estimates
   • Compare pesticide use estimates to independent estimates
   • Characterize geographic coverage of pesticide use estimates
     • Prepare land cover data for analysis
     • Summarize and visualize geographic coverage
   • Characterize sensitivity to low vs. high USGS estimate
   • Characterize sensitivity to crop area interpolation
